In the spring of 2004 while working as a Peer Mentor at The Healing Place, one of the staff members came to Tony and said, “This is something you need to get involved in, Mike knows you are coming to speak to him, now go do it!”
Tony’s advocacy work began with the Angel Program, assisting with the scheduling of volunteers to teach Recovery Dynamics classes and facilitate Big Book studies for the SAP program at The Roederer Correctional Complex in LaGrange, KY. Later he was invited to be the Coordinator for The PAR Rally “On the Capital Steps” and did so for next two years for the nationally organized Recovery Month events sponsored by Faces and Voices of Recovery. Other events coordinated have been the HBO Addiction series for the Louisville area with house parties and town hall meetings. Faces and Voices “Recovery Voices Count” “Get out the Vote” non partisan voter registration campaign. In the spring of 2005 along with other PAR members attended the Faces and Voices of Recovery summit and took the messaging training and spoke with Kentucky’s congressmen and senators to advocate for the mental health and addiction parity bill and discussed other legislative changes that are key to removing the stigma, discrimination and barriers that exist for people who seek to be re-integrated in to society upon attaining long term recovery within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Tony is currently working as the Program Director for the Morehead Inspiration Center in Morehead KY. the first Men’s facility to open of the 10 Recovery Kentucky Programs. None of these things would have been possible without the supportive, dedicated and loving members of recovery community and PAR.
